D9000 and D9016 were not orginally purchased straight out of service. D9000 was removed from the scrap line at Doncaster and placed away from the cutting area before entering active preservation.

Now in preservation

Now that D9000 and 55016 were saved the pair were taken to Nene Valley Railway to be worked on. 55016 was originally purchased as a source of spares for D9000 and not to be a running loco. These two photos were taken at Wansford on 29th March 1985.
