Restoration
55002
Work has started on 55002 again after a short break. Coolant was drained from both engines so we could remove 3 coolant pipes for repair. The top compressor was also repaired as it was not building air in the required time.
No 2 engine governor was removed from the engine and will be going away for an overhaul.
The loco should be going into the paint shop shortly for us to start fitting TPWS and OTMR.
Please keep the money coming in.

Well were back at Barrow Hill, let the work begin. 55019 and D9009 had their bed plates drained which were full of rain water. Both power units on 9 and 19 had a coolant sample taken to work out the gravity level of the coolant and we should have the results shortly as to whether the strength of the antifreeze needs adjusting. A broken light in the nose end of 19 was removed for repair. On power unit 451 in Alycidon the lagging around the troublesome collector drum and exhaust pipe removed and it is more evident where all the leaks are. After some shuffling around the depot the A frame was placed over number 1 nose end of Tulyar, this is so we can start building the nose end up over winter. The roof at number 1 end of Tulyar was lifted ready for the cantrail to be straightened.

Alycidon 50th Birthday
D9009 Alycidon celebrated her 50th Birthday at Barrow Hill on Saturday the 23rd July with around 500 visitors based on train tickets sold and DPS memberships cards seen on the gate. The day saw D9009 hauling shuttle trains with 26007 on the rear of the train. The simulator in 55008 was humming away nicely. In the depot you could have a look around D9015 cab, have a look in the museum, we had 2 different DVDs playing about Deltics, volunteers around the depot answering questions and the sales stand. The Sales Stand did good business and total receipts on the day reached around £2000. The day wouldn’t have been complete without a birthday cake which was enjoyed by all. Photo’s from the day are available here.

A day of preparation to make Alycidon look like new, ready for her birthday party next weekend. Working on the body was Geoff, David C, Pete and new volunteer David C, on the fuel tanks were Graham and James. First we applied some colour treatment, once soaked in this it was removed with a dry cloth, then we went over the top with a damp cloth then applied the polish and ‘bing’ the body and fuel tanks looks like they have just been painted. In the engine room James tidied up the collector drum lagging on PU451, the collector drum will get cleaned after the event and a resolution as to the best way to stop the collector drum leaking. Lights, cabling and other tools were removed from the engine room then coolant and oil level checks were completed, then an air test to make sure the spyrax’s were all working fine following repairs a few weeks ago. Graham, David C and James tidied the war flats, work shop and the depot.

No 1 engine was started up successfully on Saturday after the fitting of the the fuel pumps and injectors. No 2 engine was then started to test the various circuits.
We are happy to say that 55002 in now operational on 2 engines after taking power.
There are still various faults on the lighting circuit to sort out which our electrician is enjoying tracing.

Lots has gone off in the last week with the loco having it’s axles and equalising beams UAT and passing.
New tab washers were fitted, thanks to Martin Walker supplying these at the last minute.
Thanks also to rail traction supplies for providing us with axle box cover gaskets as well. The loco is now fit to be towed on Network rail.
No 1 power unit (457) had the defective fuel pumps and injectors replaced with the overhauled set provided by Martin Walker. These should now go to Colchester fuel injection LTD either Wednesday or Thursday of this week.
Work as seen the head code area’s fitted with blanking off plates, the only Deltic currently looking like this.
The loco had a full brake test after we cured a brake fault. The air tank supplying the distributor had a small air leak.

Alycidon: James removed some of the collector drum lagging on power unit 451 to find the causes of the large amount of smoke noted when D9009 was at Swanage. It appears the recent repair has a pin hole where oil has come through and combusted. Also further up the drum there is burnt oil residue, this will be cleaned to find the source. On the back plate oil has also leaked through one of the stud’s, this will require cleaning and exhaust paste around the stud where it meets the plate.
Tulyar: Pete was preparing one of Tulyar cabs for painting in gloss. James removed the 3 light fittings from each cab for Geoff to strip down for repainting, Geoff was stripping down the light fittings from the engine room ready for repainting. Howard has been soldering more lugs onto cables for the cubicles.

Alycidon: James investigated as to why there was water in the air system, during checks it was found that all 3 Spirax’s had been blanked off. On removing the blanks a lot of water came out of the air tanks, especially the tank in number 1 nose end had two full buckets. The Spirax’s were all removed for thorough cleaning, they were then refitted, the air system was pumped up and after some gentle persuasion they came back to life and the ticking sounds could heard once again. It was noted some remaining drips of water coming out of the Spirax’s so hopefully this will resolve the issue.
Tulyar: Keith was cleaning the armature on one of Tulyar’s traction motor blowers, he also test fitted the fan blade.

KOYLI has returned to the warmth of the NRM great hall following last weekends testing and fault finding. Below is a photo of her outside the workshop by Craig Windle.

Work continued this weekend on fault finding. No 1 compressor wasn’t making air so it was decided to remove the compressor head. We found that the valves had seized, so a good clean up with WD 40 did the trick. We had a brake fault on the vacuum side which was sorted.
No 1 engine requires overhauled fuel pumps and injectors. Martin Walker as very kindly agreed for us to have his spare set, it as been agreed that we will remove the old ones from power unit 457 and send them the Colchester fuel injection. Martin will have them in return.

55002 was started for the first time on 15/5/11, 14 years after overhaul. As can be expected after so long out of use it came with various faults, including a coolant flow switch not working, compressor faults and control air. No 2 engine is basically OK now with no problems to report. No 1 engine as fuel pump and injector problems which will require changing, so it was decided to “pin it out”.
On Sunday more fault finding found a blown fuse for the compressor and No 1 cubicle had it’s air supply isolated. No 2 engine was started, compressors worked, put the AWS in that worked and it took power. Fantastic. More checks to do this Friday and Saturday, please come along. Photo's from the weekend are avaliable here.
Below is a video of the first start up.
